CMS to Study Acupuncture for chronic Low Back Pain. CalATMA responds.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has requested public comment on its proposed decision memo regarding a pending federal study of acupuncture for chronic low back pain. Public comment period ends August 14, 2019.

National Coverage Analysis (NCA) for Acupuncture for Chronic Low Back Pain (CAG-00452N)

CalATMA’s Legislative and Communications committees coordinated and prepared our official comment. There were several very important issues which needed to be addressed:

  1. The proposed document would allow certain non-acupuncturists to provide acupuncture services,
  2. It excluded California licensed acupuncturists who have not also been certified by the NCCAOM,
  3. It labeled licensed acupuncturists as “auxiliary personnel”, and
  4. It initiated support for supervision of acupuncturists by physician assistants, nurse practitioners and/or clinical nurse specialists.
